Common Types of Car Accidents

If you’ve had the misfortune of being a victim of a motor vehicle accident due to the negligent driving of another, you are entitled to fair compensation. Understanding what type of accident you have been in can be beneficial in determining liability and help solidify your claim.

Though every accident is different, there are some common types of car accidents that occur. Despite the advancements in technology and safety features in cars, severe injuries can leave you with lifelong disability and financial distress. The Nye Law Group has extensive experience in car accident law and wants to help you get what you deserve.

Rollovers

Any vehicle can roll over, but the weight, height, and width make some more susceptible than others. Sports utility vehicles (SUVs), vans, and even pickup trucks are at high risk.

High speeds and wet or icy roads increase the potential for vehicle rollover significantly. The most significant factor in these types of accidents is the at-fault driver’s behavior.

Head On Collisions

Statistically, head-on collisions are the most dangerous of all motor vehicle accidents. These frequently involve a driver traveling the wrong way on a one-way street or highway. These accidents can lead to severe injuries and can be fatal in the most severe cases. The most common causes of head-on collisions seem to be driver confusion.

Driving on new roads where the signs are not clear or environmental factors such as overgrown trees and shrubbery blocking a sign can lead a driver to head into oncoming one-way traffic. Unsafe passing and impaired or distracted driving also contribute to frontal crashes. The chances of severe or fatal injuries increase as the speed and size of the vehicles escalate.

T-Bone Accident

This type of crash is also known as a side-impact collision. It occurs when the front of one vehicle hits or swipes against the side of another. They typically occur when the vehicle at fault is traveling at high speed. The passengers on the side of the vehicle where the impact occurs are at the highest risk of injury, but the force of impact can also affect others.

These incidents are seen often at intersections when one driver fails to stop at a stop sign or red light impacting the vehicle that had the right of way. Injuries can be more severe as the side of your automobile may not have the advanced safety features to protect you.

Rear-End Collision

Commonly known as getting rear-ended, these types of accidents are common. According to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) study, about one-fourth of all accidents resulting in serious injury are due to rear-end collisions. Typically, it’s assumed that the driver who hits the back of another car is at fault.

Distracted driving is primarily the cause of rear-end accidents. Cell phones, car radios, or talking to a passenger can all lead to taking your eyes off of the road. Not properly maintaining your brakes or following a vehicle too closely are also negligent driving practices. Though these accidents are usually at slower speeds, the result of any impact can hurt you.

Sideswiping

This happens when another vehicle brushes against your car, whether traveling in the same direction or the opposite. This can happen when the driver at fault drifts over to your lane, changes lanes without checking their blind spot, or when two vehicles pass each other on a narrow street.

The act of having your automobile grazed by another doesn’t necessarily cause injury, but the surprise reaction of slamming your brakes or swerving into another lane may result in serious injuries.
