Signs of Gynecomastia

Risperdal is often prescribed to treat schizophrenia and other mental disorders, including autism, dementia and bipolar disorder.

However, studies and lawsuits claim that the drug causes young male patients to have elevated levels of the hormone prolactin, which promotes breast development, symptoms of which could include:

Discharge from the nipples
Swelling
Tenderness in the breasts

Recent Risperdal Settlements

Johnson & Johnson has agreed to pay billions in fines and settlements related to the promotion of Risperdal and the side effects patients have experienced.

This includes an agreement in 2013 to pay $2.2 billion in criminal and civil fines for promoting Risperdal despite the health risks. At the time, this was the third-largest pharmaceutical settlement in U.S. history.

In July, a Philadelphia jury ordered Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a division of Johnson & Johnson, to pay $70 million to the family of a victim who suffered gynecomastia.

Four other Risperdal cases were tried in Philadelphia, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. The verdicts in those other cases ranged from $500,000 to $2.2 million.
