Serious Injuries from Bard IVC Filters

IVC filters were created for individuals who are at high risk for developing fatal blood clots. These devices are implanted in the inferior vena cava to prevent blood clots from other parts of the body from traveling to the heart and lungs.

However, when the devices fail, pieces of the filter can break off and cause many serious complications, including:

  • Puncturing veins, tissues and internal organs
  • Migrating to the lungs, heart or brain
  • Ventricular tachycardia
  • Infections
  • Hematomas
  • Hemorrhaging

If you had an IVC filter implanted in your body and you are experiencing chest pain or respiratory issues, it could be a symptom of a severe injury. Seek medical attention immediately because you may need to have the filter removed.

After you receive treatment, or your condition stabilizes, contact a reputable personal injury attorney to review your situation. You may be able to file a Bard IVC filter lawsuit to obtain compensation for what you have suffered.

Our defective medical device attorneys have years of experience with these cases and we know how to establish liability. We are aggressive negotiators who will not settle for less-than-fair compensation. We are also not afraid to go to trial to achieve justice for our clients.

Warnings about the Dangers of Bard IVC Filters

In 2010, the FDA released a safety communication that advised doctors to consider removing IVC filters from patients as soon as they were no longer at-risk for blood clots.

The organization cited concerns that these devices were not always removed after the risk of blood clots had subsided. The FDA also noted that there was a risk of IVC filters failing and causing internal injuries or migrating to other parts of the body.

Five years later, a one-year investigation by NBC News claimed that Bard knew about problems with IVC filters shortly after they hit the market.

The news organization claimed to have confidential company documents showing that Bard hired a physician to study the safety of IVC filters. The study found that these devices carried a higher risk for fracture, migration and death than the company previously thought, and suggested that a recall might be necessary.

However, Bard never recalled the IVC filters and sold more than 30,000 of them before making modifications.
