Severe Side Effects of Benicar

Benicar, also known as Benicar HCT, Azor, Tribenzor and olmesartan medoxomil, is often prescribed to treat patients with high blood pressure. However, this drug can cause dangerous side effects that send patients to the hospital, including:

Benicar Increases Risk of Type 2 Diabetes

In 2011, the FDA began evaluating several clinical trials involving patients with type 2 diabetes who took Benicar.

The first trial found that taking Benicar increased the risk of contracting type 2 diabetes by nearly nine percent. Researchers looked at the medical records for 250,000 patients and found that 65,358 developed type 2 diabetes after taking Benicar or another similar blood pressure medication.

Another trial revealed that patients diagnosed with type 2 diabetes who did not take Benicar had a lower rate of death from cardiovascular disease than patients who did take the drug. Cardiovascular death includes death from a heart attack, sudden cardiac episode or a stroke.
